About the Class.
The Teacher Academy elective class is an introduction and orientation to the teaching profession for students in grades 11-12. Students study the history, development, organization and practices of preschool, elementary, and secondary education.
Students are exposed to teaching related careers and the educational system through class discussions, participation in & observations of public classrooms (including an internship), and interactions with teachers and administrators. Throughout the year students visit and observe in a variety of public school classrooms with a culminating classroom internship experience during the spring semester. UNM and CNM both provide college days during the school year, allowing students to explore the post secondary opportunities in their education programs.
Currently, Teacher Academy is offered as a DUAL CREDIT class. This means students will earn 1 EHS elective credit, and 4 additional elective credits that collectively will meet the requirements for graduation and EDUC 1120 & 1190 at CNM. These 4 college credits are fully transferrable to ANY New Mexico institution.
